Biografía
John T. Howard is a Colombian American writer, translator, and educator.
His poetry has appeared in Copytext Magazine, Salamander, Notre Dame Review, The South Carolina Review, Hayden's Ferry Review, Denver Quarterly, swamp pink, and elsewhere; his creative nonfiction has been published by The Cincinnati Review.
His fiction is published under the name Thomas Maya, his maternal family name, and his stories have appeared in Witness, Wisconsin Review, Saranac Review, The Acentos Review, PANK, and forthcoming in F(r)iction.
Though published under different names, his work across genres returns to questions of family, inheritance, devotion, disability, and belonging.
He has served as Assistant Director for the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing, as Writer-in-Residence at Wellspring House Retreat, and he holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Indiana University.
He is currently at work on several book-length projects, including a poetry collection, a book of short stories, and a novel.
A Note on Names
My fiction is published under the name Thomas Maya, using my maternal family name, while my poetry, criticism, and creative nonfiction appear under my legal name, John T. Howard.
This distinction reflects questions of family, lineage, and identity that also animate much of my work. It is a decision that is driven by creative, political, and personal reasons. Though the names differ, they belong to the same ongoing literary project. They both belong to me.
